Skipper breaks records

Provided by Les Howard

Fleetwood's youngest trawler skipper, 23 year old George Beech is already breaking fishing records. His ship, the 334 ton Jacinta landed a catch which included 3,850 stone of hake at Fleetwood on Monday - the best for many years. It meant sleepless nights for the 15 man crew. Fishing off Sule Skerry, they ran into a glut of hake and worked almost non stop packing it tight into the ship's hold.

The catch grossed £5,447 at auction on Monday. This was perhaps less than expected. "It was due to a fall in hake prices at the moment," said a spokesman for the trawler's owners, J Marr & Son Ltd, "But it is still a very fine catch."

George's first seven trips in Jacinta have made £29,000 - believed to be a record for a new skipper at Fleetwood.. And this, his eighth trip, beats his previous best by £2,000.

Skipper Beech said, "Coming across all that hake was a fantastic sight. The most experienced fisherman had never seen anything like it before. I began fishing in the hope of breaking records but I'm doing better than I ever dreamed."
